Cake, It’s Truly Outrageous!
It was my birthday this past weekend and when thinking about it the only thing that came to mind was... cake.
I realized that I haven’t had a proper birthday cake since I was in Junior High. How sad is that? So, while 30 was all about lobster, this year was all about confection perfection. Since the party was going to revolve around the cake, it had to be something awesome. Something tubular. Something – dare I say – outrageous? Being a kid of the eighties, an era of neon colors and creative marketing, it seemed only right that I find my cake inspiration from the joyous frivoloty that was my childhood. And, when thinking of those days, the image that came to mind more clearly than anything? Jem. Hot pink, purple, ruffled, glittered, and pure fluff, Jem was the be-all, end-all of cool. With her perfect wardrobe changes, killer tunes, and endless glamour, she was everything to me as a kid. I had her dolls, I had her clothes, I had her cars, I even had her blinking earrings. And this past weekend, I had my very own Jem-inspired birthday cake!
Finding someone to pull this off, however, was going to be tricky. Sure I could make a cake that tasted good and roll some fondant over it, but my skills stop there. Enter Tara of Heavenly Bites Cakes. I gave her my memories and she delivered. Covered in stars, shoes (plastic, not edible), and replicated Jem and the Holograms instruments, the cake was giddy spectacle! I loved it. Lemon cake with lemon curd on the top tier and incredible rainbow layers with vanilla bean buttercream on the bottom, it was sweet and moist on the tongue, fun and show stopping to look at; what else could I have asked for? Do yourself a favor and check out her site, she’s got some wonderfully talented hands and fabulous sense of humor. Thanks to friends, Jem, and Tara, my birthday was truly, truly, outrageous.

HUGS to you!
@storiesofevy: Hugs back! It was yummy and of course… AWESOME.
So fun!!! Happiest of Birthdays, dear Duchess! I’m so glad you had such a fantastic day with dear friends and this fab cake.
@Krista: It was fun! Hey are you still state-side?
I had a birthday last week, too, but no cake, which, frankly, is a lot of the fun. On the other hand, danced with my boyfriend so fabulously that the Jamaican waiter begged us to keep going (now that makes an Old Dame feel Young Again)….
@Jody. I’ll trade you next year. My cake for your dancing!
Happy belated birthday! The cake looks gorgeous.
@Eliana: It was a showstopper!
